Let’s Talk AI
I cannot be the first person to use ChatGPT to write my newsletter. There must be several thousand of us across the world staring at a blank screen wondering where to start. Why waste my time trying to come up with an original thought when OpenAI can do my work for me? Here we go!

what is the social impact of ai

The social impact of AI is profound and multifaceted, influencing various aspects of society:
- Employment: AI automation can lead to job displacement in certain sectors while creating new job opportunities in others. It alters the nature of work, requiring new skills and education for the workforce.
- Economic Inequality: AI has the potential to exacerbate economic inequality if not deployed equitably. Those with access to AI technology may benefit disproportionately, widening the gap between the rich and the poor.
- Ethical Concerns: AI raises ethical dilemmas regarding privacy, bias, and accountability. Issues such as algorithmic bias, data privacy, and the ethical use of AI in decision-making processes need careful consideration.
- Healthcare: AI has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by enabling personalized medicine, accelerating drug discovery, and improving diagnostics. However, concerns about data privacy, patient consent, and the potential for bias in AI-driven medical decisions remain.
- Education: AI can transform education by personalizing learning experiences, automating administrative tasks, and providing new tools for teachers and students. However, it also raises questions about the role of educators, the digital divide, and the ethics of AI in educational settings.
- Security and Surveillance: AI-powered surveillance systems raise concerns about privacy, civil liberties, and the potential for misuse by governments or corporations. Balancing security needs with individual rights is a significant challenge.
- Environmental Impact: AI can contribute to sustainability efforts by optimizing resource allocation, predicting environmental risks, and enabling more efficient energy use. However, it also raises concerns about energy consumption, particularly in large-scale AI training models.
- Political Influence: AI technologies can be used to manipulate public opinion, spread misinformation, and undermine democratic processes. Regulation and transparency are essential to mitigate these risks and ensure the responsible use of AI in political contexts.
Overall, the social impact of AI depends on how it is developed, deployed, and regulated. Addressing the potential risks and maximizing the benefits requires collaboration between governments, businesses, academia, and civil society.

Boom! I don’t think I could have come up with all eight of those impacts. I thought of five — the ones associated with livelihoods, economic and educational equality, ethics and the impact on the environment. Pretty, pretty good, Chatbot! I haven’t read enough science fiction or near future dystopia novels to feel total panic at the idea of computers taking over the world. The idea that humans have evolved to bring ever more sophisticated technology into use over the millennia with AI being the most sophisticated of them makes sense to me. However, that’s not to say that the introduction of technology into human life has come without harm, and sometimes deep harm to people and the environment.
As we know, programs are only as good as their programmers. If people contain multitudes, and that includes multitudes of options and biases, then we should expect that ai tools will reflect those biases. In fact, the Guardian reports on a new study from Cornell University that shows how AI tools running off language models that are biased against people of color perpetuate racist stereotypes that diminish people’s ability to get hired or to be viewed as trustworthy. These consequences may not be intended, but they are pernicious, and they are real.
That’s probably why the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has issued a 5-point Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights. This AI Bill of Rights covers the main aspects of human interaction with AI systems and it seems logical and encompassing. However, this outline is a blueprint. We the people will need legislation and regulation to protect us from the downsides of AI while leaving fertile ground for entrepreneurs, scientists, artists, musicians and scholars to use it to further their work in exciting ways. I have no doubt that today’s Congress will be able to lead us through the nuanced ethical discourse that it would take for us to thread this needle.

Follow along with Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference March 18–21, 2024 that brings together brings together developers, engineers, researchers, inventors, and IT professionals to discuss ai applications across every sector of the global economy. It’s pretty exciting.
In case you were wondering where investors see the future drivers of economic growth, look no further than Nvidia, the multi-trillion dollar ai computing company that is worth more than the entire S&P 500 energy sector combined. However, there may be a bit of hype in the stock just now, requiring Nvidia to make over $200 billion in earnings by 2034, and that’s over double the amount generated by Apple and Microsoft today.
If you’ve never seen Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror, it’s worth a watch to see just how wide and deep the consequences of technology can go depending on how it’s used. (Another show produced by Brooker that takes on the trope of public tv history shows is Cunk on Earth. It’s very funny and a good brain cleanser after some of the harrowing stories found in Black Mirror.)
