Green With Envy; Let’s Talk Green Beaches
One of the latest climate solutions is greener than a wall street bonus and more valuable too since Project Vesta proposes that it can capture a trillion tonnes of excess CO2 using the power of wave energy.
The fast weathering of olivine in shallow wave pounded seas breaks down the olivine particles capturing carbon in the process and bringing it down into the ocean depths resulting in deacidification of the oceans.
The process captures 20 times more carbon dioxide than the extraction and transportation of the olivine. Thirty years of research holds that if deployed on just 2% of global shelf seas, the project could theoretically capture 100% of annual human carbon emissions. Olivine is a common and relatively inexpensive material. The project considers all life cycle implications from implementation. The open source initiative calls upon the scientific community to participate in the design of the experiments and analysis of the resulting data.
There are already four naturally occurring green beaches in the world. If just 2% of global shelf seas could be lined with olivine, Project Vesta claims that all excess CO2 could be captured, taking us back to pre-industrial levels — the only safe level of carbon for humans.

Project Vesta announced its first site for testing this year!
What if every coastal development project was required by law to deliver one viable olivine beach to offset its project impacts?
Green sand beaches are also pretty (my favorite color), but here you can find more about why they are included in the seminal text on reversing global warming.
