Last week, US rapper Kanye West announced he was running for president, with his statement quickly going viral and instigating a flurry of speculation. You heard right — Kayne for President.

Déjà vu? Correct. Kanye initially raised the idea of running for president during an acceptance speech at the MTV Music Video Awards in 2015. “I have decided in 2020 to run for president,” he said before dropping the mic and walking off the stage. His timeline was readjusted four years when, at the 2019 Fast Company’s Innovation Festival, he repeated his presidential plans and proclaimed that “When I run for president in 2024, we would have created so many jobs I’m not gonna run, I’m gonna walk.”

Running, walking, skipping, hopping and even jumping for president is almost impossible if you haven’t even filed with the Federal Election Commission or built a campaign operation. Kanye’s late entrance faces numerous other obstacles including the fact that he can no longer file as an independent candidate on several state ballots and is about to miss the deadline on an additional 9 states. He may also struggle to make it into the debates as the Commission requires a candidate to attain 15% support nationally in five reputable public polls, a previously notoriously prohibitive standard.

Semantics aside, what could we expect from such a candidate? Kanye has publicly taken an anti-vaccine and anti-abortion stance in his US presidential bid, and with respect to education he wants to reinstate “the fear and love of God in all schools and organizations”. On the flip side, his viewpoints are also anti-police brutality, anti-death penalty and his wife, Kim Kardashian-West has also been an outspoken advocate for criminal justice reform, an issue she has met with President Donald Trump to discuss multiple times.

Policies aside, the presidential wanna-be may already have his first campaign scandal. It was reported that Kanye’s clothing company Yeezy received a loan of between $2 million — $5 million from the Paycheck Protection Program, sparking outrage that the billionaire hoards allocated relief funds to struggling small businesses. Kanye may be aiming to touch the sky, but right now, he’s in the spot not looking extra fly.

If, and when, Kanye chooses to run, or walk, he will do so under the banner “Birthday Party”. Why? Because, he tells, “when we win it’s everybody’s birthday”. Rumor has it that the announcement is a mere ploy to steal votes from democratic lead former VP Joe Biden but the jury is still out on the matter. What we do know… With his attempt to date, it doesn’t look like it will be so Yeezy for him to reach the White House.

Which states will break the election? It’s still hard to tell — but if we can learn anything from past polls (hello, 2016) it’s anyone’s ball game. Currently, polls show that several key states that went for President Trump in 2016 are now actually leaning toward former VP Joe Biden.

Kayne West just released his new Yeezy Foam Runners that are the first in a line of eco-friendly footwear for the brand. In part of Yeezy’s move towards sustainability, the sneakers are made from algae with a “seed to sole” model. The futuristic shoe has already sold out, but the company plans to continue rolling out more sustainable fashion options for customers.
